Hugh’s News May 2014

bluebells

The bluebells have gone mad this year, out in strength before the end of April, and seeing them drenched in sunlight in this nearby wood certainly gave Rachel and me a feel-good experience last weekend. It’s put us in the mood for the newly styled Spring Festival show at Malvern.

We’re excited that our show season finally goes LIVE next week. We have a new location and new things for you to enjoy (see below). So we do hope you can come and join us at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival next week, for the first feelgood furniture experience of the year: the show runs from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th May.

We have 6 complementary tickets available. Please email us as soon as possible if you are interested (max 2 per applicant) and we will let you know if you are in luck or not.

If you are unable to get to Malvern, there are 12 other shows we will be going to this summer – you can see the full list here. There are also a couple of new outlets where you can see us year-round (also see below).

This year’s Malvern Spring show has a new layout and various new features which should make it an even better show for the visitor.

These include a new Food and Drink pavilion with guest appearances from James Martin and Rachel Allen, new Festival Gardens designed in collaboration with Cotswold Gardening School, as well as old favourites such as the fabulous Floral Marquee.

We have a great new site (Stand 254) on the corner of Avenue G and Row 3. We’ll be featuring the whole of our indoor collection with some exciting new fabrics and colours, plus a couple of intriguing new products. We will also have our outdoor ranges on sale, with an unbeatable show offer. So come and relax in our feelgood chairs, and bring a friend; the more the merrier!

A good friend suggested we approach the company who is supplying her new garden room, and we were delighted when Express Bifolding Doors then agreed to feature one of our Semarang sofa sets in their prestigious showroom in Redhill. If you are looking for a glassy extension of any kind we would certainly recommend you check out these guys. Their showroom in Redhill is only a couple of miles off the M25 and provides a good place to see and try the Semarang range.

Our partners at Malvern Garden Buildings have also expanded their operation, and now have a beautiful selection of their summerhouses and sheds at Squires Garden Centre in Shepperton.

There you can see our Jogya range.  They also have a set of Semarang furniture at the Toad Hall Garden Centre just outside Henley. This photo shows the Semarang range with a new colourway Geneva Charcoal – looking very smart and contemporary.

joniLatest update from Indonesia

A steady flow of orders from our customers is creating a lot of excitement and activity over in Java – and the small factory in Kendal where the Semarangs are produced has had a really hectic 4 months… which is good news for them and for us.

To give you a better idea of what the operation feels like on the ground we have put another profile on the website this time about Joni (another key member of our carpentry team) – his Indonesian name is Saeful, but mostly he is called Joni!. He is Tommy’s right hand man, and a great all-rounder.

fairtrade-dayWorld Fair Trade Day

Each year the World Fair Trade Organisation co-ordinates a day of celebration of all things Fair Trade. We’ll be following this in our own small way from the Malvern showground. But if you are curious to see what else is happening around the world have a look at the WFTO press release and event calendar for the day.

Here’s a flavour for you: “From the Pacific islands to the Andes, Palestine to Bangladesh, Mongolia to Kenya, seminars, hunger banquets, fairs, concerts and drumming, and Fair Trade fashion shows mark the day to celebrate ‘Fair Trade People.”  It’s good to be part of a global movement that is actively engaged in shaping a fairer world. Thanks for your support!

And finally…

Don’t forget we have our showroom here in Salisbury, and we are always delighted to see people any day of the week, within reason! Salisbury makes an excellent day out, and we are happy to point out the best places to visit or stay if you want to make a weekend of it. Please note: we do ask you to ring or email to make an appointment.

If there is anything else we can do to help, or if you have any suggestions for our newsletter, please just call and ask for Hugh on 01722 340882, or drop me an email:hugh@fairtradefurniture.co.uk

Best wishes

Hugh

P.S. It’s not just the bluebells we’ve been enjoying this year… we’ve also got a fantastic field full of cowslips just south of here, up on Clearbury Hill. (Does that sound like a song?!)

Our Key Man in Kendal

Joni croppedHere is our second profile of the lovely people who actually make our furniture, and who also benefit from your actual (or potential) investment in the Fair Trade model. This month we are focussing on Joni, carpenter and general Mr Fix-It with Pondok Kayu Tropis, one of our two partners on Java. PKT’s General Manager Tommy Fredrikkson describes him as their Key Man…
